Let's get our next Halloween treat underway.
This time we'll be making our own Rice Krispie Treats. Please be careful with this one, you will need an adult's help
What you'll need:
- 200g Marshmallows
- 50g Unsalted Butter
- 160g Rice Krispies
- Green food colouring gel. I use the ProGel colours available from Hobbycraft
- 100g milk chocolate
- A bag of Reese's mini peanut butter cups
- Cake Decor Edible Eyes or Scary Edible eyes - I used the scary eyes
- I used a 7" square cake tin, my treats ended up a little bit thicker than I would have liked so next time I'll use either an 8" or 9" square tin
- Greaseproof paper
- Frylight or a spray oil
I also used lollypop sticks so they are easier to dip and also to eat but you don't need to do this. Either the round white ones or the flat wooden ones work
First we need to prepare the cake tin. Cut two strips of greaseproof paper, the same width as the tin. Spray the tin with frylight then add the first strip. Spray again and add the second strip, then spray one final time. Rice Krispie treats are extremely sticky so this helps you to be able to remove the greaseproof paper once we've set the treats.
Start by adding your marshmallows and butter to a large pan, melt gently, stirring constantly until everything has melted together.
Turn off the heat and add a few drop of green food colouring, mix it into the marshmallows, check the colour and add a little more if you'd like
Then add in the Rice Krispies and stir until they are all coated in the marshmallow mixture.
Now we want to transfer the mixture to the tin, remember its sticky and anything that touches the mixture should be sprayed with frylight. Once in the tin I'm going to use a cake smoother (or the back of a spoon) to smooth the mixture down.
Leave this for around 2 hours (or overnight if you've got time) to set.
Once set, tip the treats out of the pan and cut into even sized rectangles.
If you're using lollypop sticks this is the time to add them, gently push into the bottom of each treat.
Melt the milk chocolate and dip the top of the treats into the melted chocolate, place on a strip of greaseproof paper.
Add the Reese's mini peanut butter cups to each side of the treat.
Add a blob of chocolate to the back of the edible eyes and place just under where the melted chocolate ends.
Use a little bit of chocolate on a butter knife draw a line of chocolate to represent the mouth
And that's our Rice Krispie Frankenstein's ready to eat.
Next week we'll be making chocolate cupcakes with spiders webs, I'll show you how to make the webs yourself or where you can buy them already made....
